The Northern Circuit: Tanzania's Four Core Safari Parks

The Northern Circuit is where 95 percent of Tanzania safari tours operate. Four parks cluster within a logical loop from Arusha, each offering a completely different ecosystem.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is where most quality itineraries begin, and it's the most underrated park on the circuit. The Tarangire River is the only permanent water source in a 10,000-square-kilometre region during the dry season, pulling animals in from far beyond the park boundaries. Between July and October, elephant herds gather here in numbers that exceed 300 animals at the river. If you've only seen elephants in twos and threes in other African parks, the Tarangire experience resets your scale of reference entirely.

The landscape is unlike anything else in Tanzania: ancient baobabs some estimated at over 1,000 years old rise from rugged, sun-bleached terrain. Tree-climbing lions are more reliably seen here than in Lake Manyara. Fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk, animals that don't appear on most Northern Circuit highlight reels, are regular sightings on a competent guide's morning drive.

Drive time from Arusha: approximately two hours. Park fee: $50 per person per day. Best visited as a two-night stay rather than a single day, which most rushed 5-day packages give you.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara sits at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment and packs more ecological variety per square kilometre than any other park on the circuit. A groundwater forest runs along the park boundary before opening onto lake shore, floodplain, and open savannah. The famous tree-climbing lions are seasonal and location-specific, not a guarantee, but a good guide who tracks weekly pride movements has reliable spots.

Between November and March, when water levels drop and algae blooms, the flamingos arrive in numbers that can exceed 75,000 birds along the lake's shallower margins. In July and August, the lake can be nearly dry. This is a park where guide intelligence about current conditions matters significantly.

Most itineraries use Lake Manyara as a half or full day between Tarangire and Ngorongoro. As a two-night standalone it can feel limited. As part of a longer circuit, it adds a completely different ecosystem to the narrative of the trip. Park fee: $50 per person per day.

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is a 260-square-kilometre volcanic caldera, 600 metres deep, holding a self-contained ecosystem of approximately 30,000 animals. It holds the highest density of lions in Africa per square kilometre, with roughly 70 individuals residing on the crater floor. It also holds the most reliable concentration of black rhino in Tanzania: typically 26 to 30 rhinos on the crater floor at any given time, making Ngorongoro the most dependable place to complete the Big Five in a single day.

The visitor experience is structurally different from other parks. You descend by a specific road, drive the floor for a maximum of six hours, and ascend by a different road. Vehicles must exit the floor by 6pm. The per-person NCAA (Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority) fee is $70 per person per day. The Crater floor descent adds the $295 vehicle permit. On a four-person vehicle, the crater adds approximately $144 per person above the standard conservation area fee.

Recommendation: stay on the crater rim overnight rather than in Karatu town below. Rim camps give you the 5am mist-covered view of the caldera before the day warms and the haze builds, which is one of the genuinely moving visual experiences of Tanzania. Rim temperatures drop to 5 to 10 degrees Celsius at night regardless of the time of year.

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is 14,763 square kilometres of open savannah, the largest continuous ecosystem of its kind on earth. The resident wildlife population is extraordinary independent of the migration: approximately 3,000 lions, 1,000 leopards, 250 cheetahs, and close to 4 million large mammals.

The park divides into zones with distinct characters. Central Serengeti around Seronera has the highest year-round predator density and is where most standard packages base themselves. The Northern Serengeti near Kogatende is where the July to October Mara River crossings happen. The Southern Serengeti and Ndutu area hosts the January to March calving season.

One detail consistently underquoted in competitive itineraries: the drive from Ngorongoro to central Serengeti takes 4 to 6 hours through the Ngorongoro Highlands at 3,000 metres elevation. This is not a short transfer. That travel time reduces your effective game drive hours on day one of the Serengeti if your operator doesn't plan for it honestly. Park fee: $70 per person per day.

How Long Should a Tanzania Safari Be?

Five days is the minimum for a meaningful Northern Circuit experience. Seven days is the most balanced option. Fourteen days covers the full East Africa itinerary including Zanzibar and potentially Kenya.

5-day Tanzania safari: Covers Tarangire (one night), Serengeti (two nights), and Ngorongoro (one night). The pace is fast. Drive days eat into game drive hours on transit days. You'll see the wildlife, but you won't feel settled in any single park.

7-day Tanzania safari: The sweet spot. Two nights in Serengeti with game drives in different zones, one night on the Ngorongoro rim with a full crater descent, one or two nights in Tarangire, and a buffer travel day. This is what we recommend for first-time visitors who want the complete Northern Circuit without feeling rushed.

10-day Tanzania safari: Adds Zanzibar. Flying from Arusha to Zanzibar takes 45 minutes on Precision Air or Coastal Aviation. Three to four nights on Zanzibar's northern coast after the safari circuit is one of the most complete East Africa experiences available. Tanzania Safari Health, Visa, and Safety Requirements

Tanzania e-visa: Most nationalities can apply online at evisa.immigration.go.tz. The visa costs $50 for a standard tourist entry and $100 for multiple entry. Apply at least two to three weeks before travel. Visas are typically approved within five working days but processing times can vary.

Yellow Fever vaccination: Required for entry if you are arriving from a country where Yellow Fever transmission occurs. This includes Uganda, Kenya, DRC, and several other African and South American countries. Carry your Yellow Fever certificate (the yellow card) as you may be asked to show it at entry. If you're arriving from the US, UK, or Europe directly, Yellow Fever is not required.

Malaria prophylaxis: Tanzania's safari parks carry a real malaria risk, particularly during the rainy season. Consult a travel medicine doctor at least six to eight weeks before departure. The most commonly prescribed options are doxycycline, malarone (atovaquone/proguanil), and mefloquine. Each has different timing and side effect profiles; your doctor chooses based on your health history and itinerary.

Other recommended vaccinations: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, typhoid, and tetanus/diphtheria are all commonly advised. Rabies vaccination is recommended if you plan to spend significant time in rural areas or with animals. Tanzania does not require any of these except Yellow Fever from endemic countries, but the recommendations come from substantial travel medicine evidence.

Safety: Tanzania's safari areas are extremely safe for international visitors. The main precautions are the health steps above, general urban awareness in Arusha and Dar es Salaam (leave expensive jewelry at home, use hotel safes), and following your guide's instructions inside the parks. Never leave the vehicle inside national parks without a guide's clearance.

What to Pack for a Tanzania Safari

Getting your packing right changes the comfort level of the entire trip. This is what experienced guides recommend:

Clothing: The single most important rule is neutral colors: khaki, tan, olive, brown, and dull green. Bright colors and especially blue and black attract tsetse flies, which bite. Pack in layers: early morning game drives in the Ngorongoro Highlands can be cold enough for a fleece jacket even in August. By 10am, you're in a t-shirt. Afternoons at Tarangire in October require sun protection more than warmth.
