Mt Meru

Mount Meru is located within Arusha National Park in Tanzania, approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) west of Mount Kilimanjaro. Standing at 4,562 meters (14,968 feet) above sea level, it is Tanzania’s second-highest peak. The most commonly used climbing route is the Momella Route, which typically takes 3 to 4 days to complete. This route offers a variety of landscapes, from lush forests and open grasslands to rugged, rocky terrain. Reaching the summit rewards climbers with breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding wilderness.

Mt Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is located in northeastern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. Rising to an elevation of 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), it holds the title of the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world. Climbers can choose from several routes to reach the summit, each offering unique landscapes and varying levels of difficulty. Popular options include the Machame, Marangu, Lemosho, and Rongai routes, while the Northern Circuit and Western Breach are favored by those seeking a more challenging ascent.

Mt Ol Doinyo Lengai

Mount Ol Doinyo Lengai is located in the Great Rift Valley of northern Tanzania, near Lake Natron. This active stratovolcano rises to an elevation of 2,878 meters (9,442 feet) and is known for its unique climbing experience. Unlike traditional rock or ice climbs, the ascent involves trekking on steep, ash-covered slopes, making the terrain particularly rugged and physically demanding. The loose volcanic ash and sharp inclines challenge even experienced hikers, offering a distinctive and adventurous trek.

Mt Kenya (Kenya)

Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak at 5,199 meters, offers scenic climbs via routes like Naro Moru and Sirimon. It’s less technical than it looks, though fitness and acclimatization are key. Mount Meru is a great Kilimanjaro prep, while Ol Doinyo Lengai offers a steep volcanic trek and rare glowing lava, revered by the Maasai. Each mountain provides a unique adventure for climbers seeking challenge, culture, and breathtaking views.

KiliDestination is a locally owned, non-profit tour operator based in Arusha, at the gateway to northern Tanzania's most iconic national parks. Our guides grew up here. They know where the lion prides den in the Serengeti, when the Ngorongoro Crater is quietest, and which corner of Tarangire holds the largest elephant herds in the dry season. When you book a Tanzania safari tour with us, you get that knowledge, not a script.

Best Time for a Tanzania Safari

Tanzania's wildlife parks are open year-round, but timing matters for specific experiences.

Dry season (late June to October) is the peak for wildlife viewing. Vegetation is low, animals gather around shrinking water sources, and the Serengeti's north sees the dramatic Mara River crossings of the Great Wildebeest Migration. This is the most popular and most booked window.

Green season (November to May) offers lower prices, fewer crowds, and spectacular birdlife. The southern Serengeti hosts the wildebeest calving season from January to March, one of the most remarkable and least-visited events in the safari calendar. Many travellers consider the green season the best-kept secret in Tanzania travel.

The only months we'd advise caution are April and May, during the long rains, when some roads in the Serengeti become difficult for standard safari vehicles.

Why Book Your Tanzania Safari with a Local Operator

The Tanzania safari market is dominated by international booking platforms and large outbound operators. Here's why choosing a locally based operator like KiliDestination makes a real difference:

Your guide is genuinely local, not a contractor rotated between agencies, but someone who has spent years in these ecosystems and has a personal stake in the experience. KiliDestination has operated since 2014, so our relationships with park rangers, camp managers, and local communities run deep. We operate as a non-profit: revenue goes into guide training, fair wages, and community education initiatives in Arusha. When you book with us, the money stays in Tanzania.

Planning a Kilimanjaro trek and safari in the same trip? That's our speciality. See our Kilimanjaro trekking tours. Most clients combine a 7-day summit attempt with a 3 to 4-day northern circuit safari straight after.
